A drug-free workplace is a workplace free of the health, safety and productivity hazards caused by employees’ abuse of alcohol or drugs. To achieve a drug-free workplace, drug-free workplace programs are utilized.
Typically Drug Free Workplace Programs contain the following elements;

* Supervisor Training
* Employee Education
* Employee Assistance
* Drug Testing
In 2007, of the 17.4 million current illicit drug users age 18 and over, 13.1 million (75.3 percent) were employed. Industries with the highest rates of drug use are the same as those at a high risk for occupational injuries, such as construction, mining, manufacturing and wholesale.
The impact substance abuse has on the work place is astonishing. Of the 20.4 million adults classified with substance dependence or abuse in 2007, 12.3 million (60.4 percent) were employed full-time. Employees with substance abuse problems are more likely to call in sick or skip work, have more than three employers in one years time, become injured on the job, and use more health benefits than other employees.
Creating a Drug Free Workplace Program can assist employers in establishing a drug free workplace. The benefits of drug free workplace programs include decreased insurance costs and a healthier and more productive workforce.
