There are two common ways to do an environmental drug test. The first of these is the DrugWipe, and the second is a lab-based mass spectrometry analysis.

DRUGWIPE

The DrugWipe is an on-site test that provides instant results. The test strips are made of antibodies that fit components of cannabis, cocaine, opiates, amphetamines, and methamphetamines. When the DrugWipe is wiped across a surface, the different sections of the test can detect these substances and will turn pink if they are detected.

Unlike most other forms of drug testing, DrugWipes have proven 100% accurate for surface testing by the Office of National Drug Control Policy. When used to evaluate sweat and saliva, however, accuracy is only rated at 94-97%.

It is for this reason that DrugWipes are not commonly used to detect individual use of narcotics, but rather to identify microscopic residue on surfaces. It has been used to identify locations where drugs have been used or trafficked.

Many government agencies have been using the DrugWipe since it became available in the mid-1990s. Police departments in high-risk drug areas often use it to test vehicles for the presence of drugs. DrugWipes are used by Customs agents in various countries including Germany and the United States to detect the presence of illegal drugs by simply wiping the luggage or hands of travelers. It can be used to test for drugs at the workplace, and continuous negative DrugWipe tests can result in lower insurance premiums for companies. It also can test the safety of a school environment.

MASS SPECTOMETRY

Mass spectrometry is a laboratory-based process that does not allow for instant results. The Mass spectrometry tool is used for measuring the molecular mass of a given sample. While this procedure is used scientifically for neonatal screening, water quality, and determining oil composition, it is also effective as an environmental drug test and is frequently used for drug discovery.

This test can be used to identify more drugs than most other drug tests. This is because the technique is widely used for a variety of different purposes, and measures the molecular makeup of various substances and samples.

Because it works on a molecular level, these tests have a very high sensitivity. It is often used to confirm blood or urine drug tests. Crime-scene specimens can be tested to identify illicit drug use or poisons in suspects, victims, or the deceased.
