Studies have shown that 31% of unexpected absences from work are the result of major problems in the home. Comparatively, 22% of absences were attributed to illness.

In the world today, children have more access to and a greater knowledge of addictive substances than their parents do. Struggling with substance abuse issues in the home, especially those of a child, dramatically and adversely affects parent’s performance in the workplace.

Companies can easily help mitigate these scenarios by training the parents in the workplace. By learning how to recognize the indicators of addiction and substance abuse, parents can preempt a family crises before it starts. Additional training can assist parents in discovering how best prevent an addiction, and how to handle a child with an existing addiction. Armed with knowledge, a parent becomes more confident in their ability to handle their home and family issues.

Training sessions are available online or on-site, and generally do not take more than a few hours to complete. Many foundations and non-profit alliances offer this service free of charge. The National Drug-Free Workplace Alliance offers a free online training session for supervisors, employees and parents on their website at

Employee morale raises when companies become involved with drug and alcohol abuse prevention in the home. The vast majority of parents leave company-sponsored training programs feeling more valued by their employer, and are more confident in their ability to handle a family crises without affecting their workplace performance.
