Are your employees using drugs & alcohol?

  • In 2007, 12.3 million substance abusers were employed full-time.
  • Another 40 million employees were heavy binge drinkers.
  • 7.1% of employed adults drank at the workplace, during the workday.
  • Smaller businesses are most frequently the environments with heaviest substance abuse and use. 9 out of 10 small- to medium- sized businesses (less than 500 employees) employed a current illicit drug user and a heavy drinker in 2007.
  • The best way for a business to combat these problems is by beginning a drug free workplace program. The policy needs to be solid legally and fundamentally, and drug testing needs to be done regularly.
FAQ What is a Drug-Free Workplace program?
A. A Drug-Free Workplace program generally includes five components aimed at deterring drug use in the workplace. These five parts are:
  • A Drug-Free policy
  • Supervisor training
  • Employee education
  • Employee assistance
  • Drug testing
FAQ What should a supervisor do if he or she suspects that an employee is abusing drugs and alcohol?
A. The US Department of Labor recommends that supervisors suspicious of abuse should escort the employee to a private area to ask about the employee's behavior. If possible, the supervisor should call in another supervisor or manager who can serve as a witness to the conversation. Then, the supervisor should inform the employee of his or her concerns and allow the employee to give an explanation. Based on the outcome, the supervisor should notify senior management, who may or may not decide to place the employee on suspension pending a formal investigation. If a suspension is mandated, management should arrange for the employee to be escorted home-after all, if the employee is not in satisfactory shape to work, he or she is in no shape to drive themselves anywhere.
